How to Crochet a Cute Mini Taiyaki Keyring Pouch - Free Pattern

2026. 07. 03

Keep the warmth of winter close with this cute accessory, the Mini Taiyaki Keyring Pouch pattern.

This pattern uses flat oval single crochet stitches for the body, adding textured fins and tails to create a realistic taiyaki look. It is perfect for storing AirPods, coins, or cards as a stylish keyring accessory.

Pattern Specifications

  • Difficulty: ★★☆☆☆ (Easy to Intermediate / Bag Keyring Accessory)
  • Finished Size: Approx. 12cm x 7cm (including tail fin)
  • Recommended Hook: Crochet hook 5/0 (3.0mm)
  • Recommended Yarn: Soft cotton yarn (brown or beige, approx. 30g), black beads for eyes
  • Gauge: 20 sts x 22 rows = 10 x 10 cm in single crochet

⚠️ Notice & Tips:
Keep a consistent tension to give the taiyaki a plump, bakery-fresh texture. Black beads (5mm) make the cutiest eyes, but if you don't have them, you can embroider french knots using black yarn instead.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Cast On

Prepare crochet hook 5/0 (3.0mm) and light brown yarn. Make a foundation chain of 15 stitches.

1. Body Square

Work 1 single crochet in each chain across starting from 2nd ch from hook (13 sc). Work 3 sc into the last chain to turn. Continue along the opposite side of the chain, crocheting 12 sc, and work 2 sc in the last ch. Slip stitch to join (30 sts). From Round 2 to 10, work sc around without increasing to build a pocket.

2. Opening & Drawstring

Round 11: Ch 3 (counts as dc), *ch 1, skip 1 st, dc in next st; repeat from * to make drawstring holes. Round 12: Work sc in each stitch around to finish, fasten off.

3. Tail Fin

Attach yarn to the center 6 stitches of the flat tail end (cast-on row). Ch 3, work 6 dc across. Row 2: Turn, ch 3, increase on both edge stitches (8 sts). Row 3: [ch 3, work 2 double-treble crochet together, slip stitch with ch 3] twice on both halves to create the split fish tail.

4. Assembly & Fins

Attach yarn to both sides of the body and work [sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc] in one space to make side fins. Thread a crochet chain (45 chs) through the Round 11 holes as drawstring. Sew black beads for eyes and attach a metal keyring to complete.
